Five Guys Burgers & Fries - Watch Out, Hamburgler....

The humble hamburger is a fast food staple but, thankfully, options other than drive-throughs are on the upswing. Five Guys Burgers & Fries, an American chain with a scant few Canadian outposts, is a rather delectable option in Sherwood Park.

Walk into Five Guys and find a smallish room decked out in primary colours. A concise menu features burgers either with or without cheese and/or bacon. Hot dogs and a vegetarian sandwich also appear, but make no mistake that Five Guys' raison d'etre is burgers and burgers alone. Hamburgers may be ordered as "regular" and as "little"...a "little" burger here is more than enough for a filling meal. A regular size might feed a family of four.

We order a couple of little bacon cheeseburgers with the works (i.e., ketchup, mustard, mayo, lettuce, pickles, onions and tomatoes) plus a handy helping of fries. Five Guys' fries are cooked in peanut oil and this adds a certain nuttiness to the frites. The fries are very crisp and are bolstered by a few dabs of ketchup. The burgers are very thick, cooked perfectly, and their beefiness stands up to the Mt. Everest-style pile of toppings. I can't even finish mine. I'm not sure that, nutritionally speaking, Five Guys' burgers are healthier than those from regular fast food joints, but taste-wise they trump all of the fast food contenders. It's not haute cuisine by any stretch and the burgers stay in very safe territory, but nonetheless I'd love to see a Five Guys open downtown so I don't have to drive next time a burger craving strikes...
