I'm Moving Back to Print Media

Dear Readers,

I began writing this blog, which started as "Dine & Write" (a title I was never entirely happy with) and morphed into "The Good, The Bad & The Hungry," in March of 2011. When I read through my old posts, I marvel at how our city's dining scene has evolved and matured in five short years. This is truly an order of magnitude's worth of change. Five years ago, I never could have imagined that so many independent coffee shops would flourish, that the cocktail scene would be as crafty and clever as it now is, and that "brown butter" would not require several sentences' worth of explanation every time it was uttered.

We are not done; evolution is an ongoing process and never a race to a final point of stasis. Any given entity - be it culinary or otherwise - survives and thrives because its various features render it suitable to prosper in the prevailing environmental circumstances. That which we see prosper and thrive do so because we - we Edmontonians - have created an environment that favours and treasures these independent gems, and I hope that this continues for a long time. I do not want to call it a trend. To do so would be unfair and flippant, thereby implying that good food comes and goes as often as flared jeans.

No. Good food and the talented people behind it are part of us. Part of our city. Part of why we all do what we do. Part - no, the main reason - why I write. I extend the deepest of gratitude to everyone I have met either behind the counter or in front of it. Thank you. For everything.

I'm writing this because I will not be updating this blog regularly anymore. It has become far too time-consuming, and instead I have returned to print media as a contributor to the Globe & Mail (as well as Maclean's when they shine my Bat Signal in the air). I wrote a feature for the G&M back in December (read it here) and it went over so well that I was invited back. I am honoured and humbled.

See you in the papers!

Yours,
Liv.
